2007 Bowls and Squash Guernsey Games  - 7th February 2007

Guernsey will be hosting an alternative “Island Games” from the 29th September to 5th October 2007 for the sports of Bowls and Squash.

This summer’s Rhodes Games Sporting Programme does not include Bowls and Squash, but a number of Member Islands who competed in the Shetlands wished to compete again in these sports, so we came up with the idea of holding a separate event entitled: “2007 Bowls and Squash Guernsey Games”.

All Member Islands of the International Island Games Association have been invited to participate in the 2007 Bowls and Squash Guernsey Games and it is expected that between 120 and 200 Competitors/Officials from possibly 15 different Member Islands will take part.

The General Organising Committee is made-up of Officials of both the Guernsey Indoor Bowling Association and the Guernsey Squash Rackets Association, together with Roy Martel, Chairman of Sports Guernsey, which has provided substantial financial support.  Additional commercial sponsorship is currently being sought.

The Bailiff has kindly agreed to be the Patron of the Games, in view of his very keen support for Guernsey sport.  Most recently he attended the 2005 Island Games in Shetland and the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.  The Bailiff and Mrs Rowland will be presenting each Member Island ’s Bowls or Squash Team with a gift on behalf of Guernsey at the Opening Ceremony, which will be held at the Peninsula Hotel on Sunday 30th September 2007.

A Web Site has been created to enable the Member Islands, media and the public to access all the available information on: www.2007bsGuernsey.com

Bowls:

The Bowls format will be a continuation of the 2005 Island Games format - Men’s and Ladies, Singles, Pairs and Fours.  The Team medals will also be awarded to both the Men’s and Ladies top teams.  The event will be held at the Guernsey Indoor Bowls Stadium.

Squash:

The Squash format will again be a continuation of the 2005 Island Games format - Men’s and Ladies, Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles.  The Team event will be 3 Men and 2 Ladies.  The event will be held at Beau Sejour Leisure Centre.
